Course Description:
Pathways is a blended-learning course that is based on the Pathways and 21st Century book series from National Geographic Learning, which uses real-world materials to simultaneously train English language abilities and academic study skills. Students will not only practice their general English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, but will also learn how to apply these skills in academic settings, for example by practicing how to take notes during lectures. The Pathways programme is divided into three course modules (Summer, Spring and Fall) which can be studied in any order. The academic skills covered in this module include note-taking, interpreting data, making inferences, and general presentation skills. This blended-learning course combines classroom learning with extended language practice online using moodle. It is particularly useful for students planning to study in English-language degree programmes, either abroad or here in Weimar.

Course Objectives:
• Improve proficiency in all four language areas: listening, speaking, reading, writing.
• Communicate effectively in both spoken and written English on various academic topics.
• Develop academic skills (note-taking, presentation skills, etc.) necessary for studying in English.
• Practise critical thinking skills in combination with reading and listening comprehension.
The goal of this course is to provide students with the necessary skills and confidence to understand and communicate effectively in both written and spoken English, thereby enhancing their academic and professional prospects.
Prerequisites:
This course is designed at B2+ level, meaning that it is an ideal course for students at B1 level looking to quickly progress towards C1 or for students who are at B2 level and would like to obtain extra practice before progressing to one of our C1 courses.
Assessment:
Assessment will include a combination of online assignments and three quizzes.
If you anticipate or experience any barriers to learning, discuss your concerns with the instructor.
Course Materials:
The teacher will provide all materials needed for the course. Students may bring materials from their degree-programme classes to receive help with reading comprehension and to replace some of the assigned reading tasks.
